What Is a Memory Care Endorsement?
And Why “Memory Care at Home” Might Be the Best Fit for Your Loved One
If you’re caring for a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s, you’ve likely heard the term “memory care endorsement.” But what does that really mean?
What Does “Endorsement” Mean?
In healthcare licensing, an endorsement is an official designation that allows a provider or facility to offer a specific level of specialized care. In the case of memory care, it means the facility has met specific requirements to serve individuals with cognitive decline — such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease — in a safe, structured, and supportive environment.
How Is Memory Care Licensed in Nebraska?
In Nebraska, most memory care settings are licensed under assisted living facilities, with an endorsement to provide memory care. To receive this endorsement, providers must meet additional requirements including:
- In NE Direct care staff must complete 4 hours yearly specifically focused on dementia care and cultural competence for residents with Alzheimer’s or related cognitive disorders
- Secured or monitored environments to reduce elopement risks
- Structured daily routines and programming
- Plans for behavior management and specialized nutritional care
- Nebraska’s memory care endorsement doesn’t require a specific staff‑to‑resident ratio. Regulations emphasize that facilities must maintain “a sufficient number of direct care staff with the required training and skills necessary to meet the resident population’s requirements” and must ensure at least one staff member is awake, fully dressed, and on duty at all times to supervise residents.
But what if your loved one doesn’t want to move to a facility? What if they want to stay in their home, surrounded by what’s familiar and comfortable?
What Does Memory Care at Home Look Like?
Memory care doesn’t have to mean a facility. At Home Care Partners, we reimagine what memory care can look like — and it often starts right at home.
Here’s what that can look like:
- A calm, familiar environment — no confusing hallways, no strangers.
- Soothing background music that Mom loves. We play her favorite tunes.
- Slower pace, no rushing — time to process, respond, and feel heard.
- Objects and photos that mean something — family heirlooms, comfy chairs, favorite mugs.
- Daily rhythms that give purpose — folding her laundry, setting up her decorations, watering her garden, or taking walks past neighbors who greet her by name.
- Familiar bathrooms and furniture — no learning new routines.
- Care Partners to support with tough tasks — remembering to eat, managing incontinence, staying on a sleep routine, taking medication, or redirecting when confused.
- 24/7 Safety devices to provide around-the-clock peace of mind.
At home, we can control the environment, preserve dignity, and support both the person and the family in the most personal way.
When Is the Right Time?
Don’t wait until you hit a crisis point or feel like it’s “gotten that bad.”
Memory care doesn’t have to start with a locked unit or a move out of your home.
It can start with just a few hours of help each week — the right amount of care, in the right place.
If your loved one is:
- Experiencing memory lapses
- Struggling with sequencing or completing tasks
- Losing track of time or wandering
- Withdrawing from busy social events
- Forgetting to eat / losing weight
- No longer safe to drive
- Showing signs of incontinence
…it may be time to explore memory care at home.
