Parkinson’s Awareness Month in Nebraska: Why Specialized Home Care Matters More Than Ever

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, and we are grateful to Governor Pillen for officially recognizing this important cause here in Nebraska. This proclamation is more than a moment—it’s a powerful reminder that individuals and families living with Parkinson’s disease are seen, supported, and not alone.

The Growing Impact of Parkinson’s in Nebraska and the Heartland

Across the Heartland—including Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska—an estimated 46,841 individuals are currently living with Parkinson’s disease, with nearly 4,000 new diagnoses each year. Here in Nebraska, those numbers continue to rise.

As a proud agricultural state, Nebraska’s deep connection to the land is part of our identity. However, increased exposure to environmental factors such as pesticides, herbicides, and rural water sources has been increasingly linked in research to a higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. This makes awareness, early detection, and proactive care more urgent than ever.

Behind Every Diagnosis Is a Family

Parkinson’s disease doesn’t just affect individuals—it impacts entire families.

It’s a father noticing his hands don’t move like they used to.
A mother working to maintain independence despite tremors.
A spouse stepping into the role of caregiver.

Too often, families face these challenges with limited guidance, delayed diagnoses, and restricted access to specialized care.

The Need for Parkinson’s-Specific Home Care

At our home care agency, we recognized a critical gap—and made the decision to specialize in Parkinson’s home care in Nebraska.

Our caregivers are intentionally trained to understand:

  • The importance of timed medication management
  • How Parkinson’s affects mobility, cognition, and speech
  • Techniques to reduce fall risk and hospitalizations
  • Ways to support both clients and family caregivers

This specialized approach allows us to deliver care that truly meets the unique and evolving needs of those living with Parkinson’s.

How Proper Parkinson’s Care Improves Quality of Life

When Parkinson’s disease is properly managed, outcomes improve significantly.

Specialized home care can help:

  • Reduce falls, emergencies, and hospital visits
  • Improve daily functioning and independence
  • Provide stability and peace of mind for families
  • Allow individuals to remain in the comfort of their own home

Our mission is simple: to help individuals age in place safely—staying in their “forever homes” for as long as possible while receiving the support they need.

Why Awareness Matters

We cannot do this work alone. Awareness is the first step toward change.

Parkinson’s awareness:

  • Reduces stigma
  • Encourages earlier diagnosis and intervention
  • Connects families to vital resources and support
  • Inspires community action and advocacy

Here in Nebraska, where community runs deep, awareness leads to real impact.

Moving Forward Together

Thanks to continued research, advocacy, and local support systems, progress is being made. We are improving quality of life—not only for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s, but also for the families who walk alongside them every day.

This Parkinson’s Awareness Month, we invite you to join us:

  • Learn more about Parkinson’s disease
  • Support local families and caregivers
  • Share resources and information
  • Advocate for better care and access

Together, we can ensure that every Nebraskan living with Parkinson’s feels supported, empowered, and never alone.
